Barcelona: Think bullfighting, speaking Spanish and FreeTapas? Think Again!

27 05 2010

Barcelona: An international city upheld by some, a separatist front for others

A common misconception is that all of Spain is the same for tourists? It isn’t. Barcelona is situated in Cataluna having it’s own customs, language and traditions. Although Cataluna shares a lot more similarities than differences in terms of shared culture via diffusion one must note that Cataluna has a fair share of nationalist / separatist points of view. This has its background as outlined succinctly here.

What is the point of communication exactly?

For a tourist, you might think that Spanish is spoken throughout what is popularly known as Spain. In Barcelona, a widely advertised cultural city, it is not uncommon to encounter stores that ONLY speak in Catalan. Normally these stores, restaurants and bars are clearly marked by a sign. However, not all places display the sign. So where does this lead you dear tourist and or migrant?

For I, the purpose of communication is  an answer by definition. To communicate. What facilitates communication is and always has been a shared experience with a fair degree of compromise. For example, making sounds and hand movements to get understood by children and those with disabilities. If forms of communication CAN happen it is ignorant IMHO not to  find some middle ground. Sometimes this can involve switching languages.  Sure, I’m not fluent in Catalan, I can stumble on words as would any tourist. The question I beg is this. If you knew another language and could help someone else, would you not at least try?

The answer is, “Well, no”. Amongst friends from Cataluna they too are amazed by the stupidity of a rising minority of anti-internationalist idiocy that’s increasing.   My point of contention is as follows. A city is not an international or cosmopolitan central if the shared languages or international languages  of the country are not adhered to.  As with most countries with provinces, there is for the most part a dominant language which people share. From this basis, we have compromise or fluency.

Cataluna: Rich in heritage, culture and doing its best from the Spanish Constitution

Indeed, Cataluna has achieved quite a bit of independence, it has it’s own Parliament and is nurturing its own culture and language. For a relativist anthropologist such as I,  it should do and it does constitutionally. Good for them. Still for this author, I’m having trouble understanding the peril vs communication. It seems other countries, like Wales, the language is indeed in peril per capita!

Catalan vs other language communication. International City? Some try their hardest not to be.

I come to a point now. How is it that various webpages from the Catalan government publish in English and Spanish? One has to ask therefore the nationalist / separatist throng seem to have got the wrong end of the stick? I would like to think so.

Catalan language at Risk?

Having lived the same amount of time in Wales, I found that the Welsh were more willing to budge in terms of language than their Catalunian counter-parts. As Catalunia has a higher amount of speakers per capita than Wales, one does beg to differ in the terms of loosing cultural heritage, if not only to help its multicultural inference. [See link on Welsh Speaking Populations].

Cataluna has instituted shops that ONLY speak in Catalan. [See BBC news article]. This BBC article fails to announce that even though you speak in one language you get answered in another. Has this shown some form of cognition?

So, again I must ask… can you really state a city for example is international while instituting separatist agendas. I think there’s some logically incompatibilities. It seems that communication and diffusion of cultures is readily accepted into the Catalan language. Take for example many English terms that have been assimilated.

Valencia and Andorra: Speak Catalan Dialects, more at risk but more international

Having traveled to Valencia that have their own, albeit similar language to Cataluna and Andorra, the wish to communicate in other languages is altogether more open. Putting this into context, the population vs risk of loosing the language is proportionality higher than Cataluna! [See link on Catalan Language Speaking Areas/Countries]

I leave it up to you dear reader to investigate the subject further. I for my part believe that many social servants, restaurant workers are clearly client focused and are more than happy to change language [English, Spanish, French] as this shows culture as well as intelligence.  If you come to Barcelona I recommend you boycott the establishments that refuse to budge on communicating, add a nice Google, Trip Advisor and other review to aid other travelers.

Having been living here 4 years here’s a few eye openers.

Barcelona Free Tapas and Bullfighting?

Bullfighting: STILL happens but is outlawed. Do you understand this? I don’t. http://gospain.about.com/od/bullfightinginspain/qt/barcabullfight.htm

Free tapas? Well, you need to go to Andalusia. You won’t find it in Barcelona, where you’re charged a fortune for pretty much a saucer of bite sized mars bars for a similar 14″ pizza found in an Italian restaurant. There is a bar called Paco Meralgo and no,  I don’t recommend this restaurant.

The coolest city is Granada, but Cadiz is accessible from the UK and has bullfighting and free tapas- olay!

Ache of Return: Very Early Demo and Work in Progress

Enthroned Within

Enthroned Within: Click to view new logo

New preview to a song in progress from Enthroned Within entitled Ache of Return. This song does not feature vocals and is subject to a LOT of changes

Give it a play, please 😀

Please note that the 28 days later similarity was coincidental.  This is going to be changed with collaboration ;-D. There’s some funky distortion popping which I quite like, but they might be taken out.

I throws me back to my love of Curve and Slowdive. Lyrics are being summoned up at present, from the ether!

Trent Reznor from NIN has teamed up with his wife Mariqueen Maandig to create a new band called “How To Destroy Angels” . It can be viewed here. The official site has more vids plus links to buy the tunes! http://howtodestroyangels.com/home.html

First my hopes were REALLY high, it sounded like the lead singer from Curve, but was his wife :-(. Trenty boy… you need to work with Toni Halliday

Still sounds an interesting project.

Enthroned Within Announce Album Release: End Of July/August 2010

19 05 2010

Enthroned-Within-Album-CoverEnthroned Within Solo/Collaboration Update. Album name announced.

I’ve finally got the concept down for the album I’m creating as a solo project under the band name: Enthroned Within.

I’ve decided to collaborate with some friends to aid with a few tracks as well as potentially put a few layers of guitar to aid with the overall sound distribution.

I’ve been trying to get the sound levels balanced with putting a bass through a guitar amp. Although it’s interesting, it’s not enough to get the levels for anything commercial.

I hope with help to get it mastered and remixed in July.  With luck, it ought to be ready for an August release. This is very tentative, but I’ve got a date to work to now!

The album has been entitled, “Synapze“. A synapse as well you ought to know is the the space between neurons and therefore the place where thought is created. I added a Z  to differentiate it the word purposefully:-p

During June I’ll be laying down the last lot of vocals and borrowing a guitar to balance the sound levels.

Album Concept and background

The concept for the album takes on the idea of personal liberation, both politically and psychologically.  The concept is that bad politics and politicians are entwined with our own morality. Their actions are complicit to ours.

Our inner demons and our struggle to get rid of them is tied up in a struggle for personal freedom.  So, there’s a connection to personal and political freedom and one is transposed onto the other.

All in all, it’s similar in tone to my own appreciation of Floyd’s, The Wall. If I’m able I’ll be adding on some incidental effects of my own making. I’ve other  friends who have agreed to aid with a proper video. At present it’ll be for one song, Hate Breeds Complicity.

Background

For me it’s more an experiment in how far I can take the bass guitar, music production and home recording. No visions of fame and fortune, although that’d be nice. More than likely I’ll be using Reverb Nation’s distribution. I’m using Riffwork’s to do the first level of production.

I’ve kept names of the collaborators from the posting until it’s more concrete.

Style and Influences

If possible, I’ll be working with a friend with producing the end mix for the album. I’m trying to find a Tool and Fields of the Nephilim-esque guitarist. {If there’s any Tool and Neph’s lovers using Riffworks, I’d be happy to collaborate. Please comment at the end of the post with contact details.}

The tone is gothic more through vocals and progressions. It’s Tool-esque and proggy as that is my adopted style.  I’ve been stuck with Riffworks and the drums can only work in 3/4 or 4/4. Originally, songs were written in 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 11/8 and 13/8. I’ve worked my hardest to get the songs to work within the program. As such, some of the guitar/bass sounds seem to be very weird on the album.

Anyone who’s known my music since the early days of Cantrip [late 80’s early 90’s] will know my style was developed around the same time as Tool with Rush as the main influence. However those guys are famous and well known, and Cantrip died when I went to university.

If I can’t get any guitars on the album, it’ll be probably the first drum and bass, prog gothic metal album! 😀

I was just surprised how much stuff I had written. It’s just over 17 songs in 3 months. 2 songs have been lifted from other bands that have since passed. I would like to thank Luis Fontes and Jean-Baptiste Seguin for their input on Body Modification. Both will be credited on the album.

A few riffs from Within Without are entirely my own however it was produced originally in 1992.

I’ve got working titles fixed up, marked with {WT}. The other songs have been laid down already.

Synapze track listing

Here’s what’s planned to go on the album. Note: The track listing isn’t  in chronological order.

  1. Intro {WT},
  2. Hate breeds Complicity,
  3. Sisters:  Love and War,
  4. The Antecedent{WT},
  5. The Precedent{WT},

  16. Everything is Connected{WT}.

2 Bonus tracks to feature on Synapze

  1. Solace is Beauty {COLLABORATION}
  2. The NeverEnd {COLLABORATION}

I’ve got 2 collaboration songs I’ll be putting on the album. One is a duet called Solace is Beauty and another is The Neverend. The latter will be in 2 versions, one with a talented vocalist and guitarist.

The Neverend will feature my own vocals for a concept  album version. In the end, it’ll be 2 versions of the song.

Solace is Beauty will feature guest female vocals and the aforementioned male singer.

    Production help

With luck I hope to get the album up to good pre production levels, outputting in 32bit Wav Files with 512k latency, I expect some quality sounds.

A friend has agreed to work with me. If I am to make any money on the album [potentially online radio station plays] then I’ll be sharing the profits with any collaborators.

    Thanks

A special thanks to all who’ve supported me so far. Credits and dedications will appear on the album!

Magna Carta Records: Tribute to Rush: Featuring Dream Theater, Korn, Testament, Skid Row, Dillinger Escape Plan and Coheed & Cambria

    15 05 2010

Magna Carta Records: Tribute to Rush: Album out 18/05/10
Featuring artists from Dream Theater, Korn, Testament, Skid Row, Mr Big, Dillinger Escape Plan and Coheed & Cambria

Some indie label released cover albums from my favourite band Rush have escaped me. One of these has been from Magna Carta Records.

Entitled New World Man: A Tribute to Rush, the album comes out 18 May, 2010. On the Magna Carta Records site we’re treated to some very short preview from the songs. From the imbedded player you get a taste from this high produced album.

One song which piqued my attention was my favourite Force Ten, with Robert Barry. There’s just some crazy fast guitar work that kinda puts the original keyboards to shame!

Another song, a classic is played by I,Omega. We get a very interesting take on Tom Sawyer. There’s almost a Placebo vocal feel of the original.

The record includes contributions by the following big boys!

    • Chris Pennie from Dillinger Escape Plan / Coheed and Cambria
    • Juan Alderete from Mars Volta
    • Shane Gibson from Korn
    • Dave Martone from Dave Martone
    • John Petrucci from Dream Theater
    • Billy Sheehan from Mr Big
    • Alex Skolnick from Testament
    • Andreas Kisser from Sepultura
    • Sebastian Bach from Skid Row
    • Eric Martin from Mr Big
    • Vinnie Moore from UFO
    • Kip Winger from Winger
    • Mike Mangini [not sure could be a guitarist or drummer]
    • Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater, Cygnus

Nice line up eh! So what’s on the album? Here’s the track listing and length!

    • New World Man feat Robert Berry 3:48
    • The Trees feat Mike Baker 4:34
    • Fly By Night feat Sal Marrano 3:55
    • Mission feat Eric Martin 5:37
    • Tom Sawyer feat I,Omega 4:50
    • Jacob’s Ladder feat Sebastian Bach 7:38
    • Limelight feat Kip Winger 6:10
    • Force 10 feat Robert Berry 4:29
    • Subdivisions feat Randy Jackson 7:48
    • Tom Sawyer feat Alex Skolnick Trio 6:34

I’m really looking forward to this release.  You can find a review of the album from some lucky geezer who got a press copy here.

Here’s a video from a previous video / music excerpt  so you’ll get an idea of the quality you can expect.

Check out those licks…. they’re really tasty!

Mahou and Amstel Going Head to Head

    13 05 2010

Mahou and Amstel Going Head to Head

Man it’s a hard decision when I go out to the shops deciding which beer to buy.

Amstel have been hammering their publicity with funnier adverts than Mahou. Meanwhile, at the supermarket a can of Amstel has 14% more in it. On the face of it, Amstel’s offer seems to be dwarfed by Mahou’s 30% extra. I’ve yet to see an advert with Mahou’s new offer! Let’s see what happens!

It goes without saying, the difference is in the price vs quantity. Mahou costs around 58 centimos, whereas Amstel costs around 48 centimos. Most of my friends prefer Estrella, which face it is a very nice beer. But, in a recession sometimes changing your tastes to fit your budget is the all deciding factor. That is, if you’re tired of drinking Xibecca which probably wins on price overall anyway!

So what do you get for your money in the Mahou vs Amstel price vs quantity war?

A 430 ml can of Mahou vs 375 ml of Amstel. A ten pack will get you over 1/2 a litre more of Mahou than you could for a 10 pack of Amstel.

In effect, you get a can and some dregs of Mahou for the same  quantity of beer cans. The other choice is to pay 1 euro more for 2 cans of Amstel for a little over the same quantity of beer! Ohhh… tough choice!

For a 2-4 centimos saving vs Mahou, one may enjoy 2 cans of cold Amstel beer fresh from the fridge and maybe get 2 new best friends. Perhaps the adverts are true after all! These friends you might not want to share. Oh, the cheek of it!

Personally, I prefer Mahou. Amstel has grown on me. In Consum there was an offer for Alhambra beer, which is smooth and they say its made with natural ingredients! It’s a nice beer from Granada.

Alhambra is sold for the same price as a Mahou and with around 30% extra as well. Choices, choices!

For me, Amstel has to win the game, but only on price. You can enjoy more beer for the same money. However, if you’ve been to Spanish parties anyway, you will find that a can is opened and if it gets a little warm it’s rejected and another can is opened. This leaves around 1/2 a can of beer… wasted! Ekkk!

On another note, Estrella Damm seem to be moving out into Weiss Beer. The author apologies if this is old news, but I’ve only just come across it. For a 330ml bottle it costs around 1 EUR. Let’s hope they move it to cans and at a lower price!

If you love Mexican beer, there’s an offers this week at Lidl for Negro Modelo, Corinita and Sol. Check here, last 3 on the list.
